The Development of Greek Technology

On the interior of a drinking cup, above, from ca. 480 BC, a young Greek man gingerly holds a stylus which he is using to write on the folding tablet on his lap. It looks like he’s using a laptop computer. If it weren’t for the Greeks’ curiosity and their love of mathematics and science, we wouldn’t have computers. As far as the development of technology (from techne = craft in work, especially metal-working, and logos = logic; thus the logic of a craft) is concerned, we are simply putting the flesh on the Greek skeleton (from the Greek skeleton, dried body).

Our scientific terms are based almost exclusively on Greek words. Here are just a few of them: electricity, electron, atom, physics, astrophysics, biology, thermodynamics, geometry, archeology, and psychology (from psyche = soul and logos = logic; hence the logic of the soul). The books from Matthew to Revelation were originally written in Greek. In II Timothy 3:16 we read that “All Scripture is inspired by God.” If that is true, then we can say with certainty that the Supreme Creator of all things chose ancient Greek, a language of great clarity and precise structure, to communicate with his human creations. Isn’t that reason enough to familiarize yourself with the ancient Greeks?
